The 90MW Burbo offshore wind farm in Liverpool Bay which Wind Prospect developed from 1999 to 2003 started generation in  October 2007.  Dong Energy’s offshore wind farm uses Siemens 3.6MW turbines, the biggest yet to be installed in UK waters on a commercial scale project.

The Burbo Offshore wind farm was only the fifth offshore wind farm to be constructed in the UK. The wind farm covers 10 Km2 of Liverpool Bay in Northwest England, and has 25 turbines generating 3.6MW each, producing a total of 90MW.

Burbo Bank was a technically challenging environment, with an 8-10m tidal range, strong currents and mobile sediment regime. Wind Prospect Group undertook detailed feasibility assessments, including consultations with the UK government. A full planning application and EIA were submitted in 2002, leading to full Government consent in July 2003. The project was successfully awarded a grant of £10M in summer 2003 by the British Government.
