Australian Gas and Light (AGL) announced today that it would construct the 95 MW, $236m Hallett Wind Farm. This project was developed by Wind Prospect and was formerly known as the Brown Hill Range wind farm. It will generate the equivalent electricity to power 53,000 average South Australian households.

This announcement by AGL is a major landmark for Wind Prospect. Wind Prospect identified the site in 2002 as a prime wind farm location, due to its superior wind resource and proximity to AGL's Hallett Power Station. It subsequently prepared a comprehensive Environmental Statement, secured the land and optimised the design of the wind farm in the light of all the relevant considerations.

AGL has announced that construction will commence in September 2006 and initial commissioning is expected in December 2007. A turnkey Engineer, Procure and Construct (EPC) contract has been awarded to Suzlon Energy Australia Pty Ltd. for delivery of the complete project. Approximately 150 jobs will be created during construction.

Wind Prospect will continue to provide ongoing professional engineering services to AGL during construction.

Speaking from Wind Prospect's office at Christies Beach near Adelaide, Managing Director Michael Vawser said:

"Hallett is the third and by far the largest of our developments in Australia to reach construction, following Mount Millar (70 MW) and Canunda (46 MW). In total we have achieved 630 MW of development consents and 221 MW of realised projects to date, all in South Australia, which makes us the most successful wind farm developer in the Southern Hemisphere. This is a tribute to our highly dedicated and professional team.

However, the continued failure of the Federal Government to provide a successor to MRET, Australia's market enabling mechanism for renewables, means that only a proportion of these sites, or indeed consents for sites held by other developers, are likely to be implemented in the foreseeable future.

The renewables business in Australia is on hold until the Howard Government faces up to the challenge of global climate change and rejoins the international efforts to stem greenhouse gas emissions".
