The Barunga Wind Farm is being developed along the Hummock
and Barunga Ranges, west of Snowtown in South Australia's
Mid-North. Provisional development plan consent was granted
by the Wakefield Regional Council in January 2004 for up to
130 wind turbines, together with an underground electrical
cable network, access tracks, crane hardstandings and up to
ten wind monitoring masts. Council subsequently granted consent
for the electrical transmission infrastructure in August 2004.
The Barunga Wind Farm is being developed in two groups by
separate companies: one group of up to 85 wind turbines is
being developed by Wind Prospect Pty Ltd, and the second group
of up to 45 wind turbines is being developed by TrustPower
Australia Holdings Pty Ltd. The output capacity of the wind
farm will be approximately 260MW.
The Barunga Wind Farm proposal was initially made known to
the local community by way of newsletters and a public exhibition
held by Wind Prospect at the Soldiers Memorial Hall in Snowtown,
in March, 2003. Over 90 people attended the exhibition, and
of the 58 people who completed public opinion surveys, 96.5%
either approved of, or were not opposed to, the proposed Barunga
Wind Farm.
