Another Green Light for Wind Prospect
23 September 2004
Over one hundred thousand more South Australian homes are
set to be supplied with clean green energy after the Wakefield
Regional Council recently granted planning consent for the
Barunga Wind Farm transmission line infrastructure.
The Barunga Wind Farm consists of two separate projects being
independently developed by Wind Prospect Pty Ltd and New Zealand
energy utility TrustPower Australia Holdings Pty Ltd.
Wind Prospect is developing 85 turbines, and TrustPower 45
turbines, making 130 turbines in total. These will generate
at least 260MW of clean green power, leading to a reduction
of almost a million tonnes of harmful CO2 emissions per year.
The developers can now proceed with detailed design of the
power transmission lines and substations, which will carry
power from the Barunga Wind Farm to the national grid at Brinkworth.
Wind Prospect Development Manager Andrew Dickson was pleased
with the go-ahead signal, saying:
"Receiving this Provisional Development Plan Consent is
an important milestone for the Barunga Wind Farm project,
and it takes us one step closer to providing South Australians
with a cleaner energy alternative."
The site is located along the Hummock and Barunga Ranges,
about 7km west of Snowtown in South Australia's Mid-North.
It should be operational in 2006.
